If you, like me, have ever wondered how the Torah can be applied to secular life, Rabbi Gerson, of our own Oak Park Temple, offers a great demonstration in his wonderful Yom Kippur Sermon. It is the best elucidation of a political perspective founded on a religious ethos I have ever heard. It's long. Print it out and read it carefully. It's awesome.

Al Gore didn't say 'invent' but he probably should have. I'm outraged!

Just in case anyone is confused... Reasons to vote against
George Bush

(Gore notes below)

1) Federal mandatory testing of students to determine their grade. He wants to put an end to the nasty practice of actually taking the child's circumstances and abilities into account in guiding his education in favor of federal standards. 2) He has promised to stack the Supreme Court with justices like Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas. These are extremely conservative people that believe in the assertion of government authority, christian morality and, under the guise of 'natural law', lassez faire capitalism. Bush's court can be relied upon to set the government and corporations free in their pursuit of stronger means to control and exploit people. 3) He has no respect for the environment. He has denied the greenhouse effect, made clear that perservation of the environment is not a significant factor, and ridicules efforts to avoid species extinction ("I'm against removing dams."). Texas is an environmental mess unders his stewardship. 4) He wants to give corporations more power over our lives by transferring Medicare to their tender mercies along with 14% of the Social Security fund. Not only won't we see benefits from these programs (HMOs are already failing their Medicare clients, but most people have no idea how to invest and many lose money. 5) He has a dangerously unsophisticated view of foreign policy. In the debate he suggests that the Russians should broker a solution to the election crisis in Serbia, despite the fact that their perspective is opposed to our interests. 6) He is a puppet of the right wing. In addition to the fact that he has been lavishly funded by right wing interests, he makes clear that, for example, if a financial crisis occurred, he has no preconceived ideas of his and that he would focus on gathering resources to tell him what to do. 7) His tax plan guts the government's ability to help and protect people while favoring the rich. Even worse, the injection of these huge amounts of money into the economy would overheat growth and encourage inflation. 8) He is a lying hypocrit. It is hard to decide which is harder to stomach, his lies about Al Gore (eg, that he claimed to 'invent' the internet, check out the truth) or his criticizing Al Gore for dishonesty by using this and other lies as evidence. Reasons to vote for Al Gore 1) He is pro-choice. 2) He has a strong record and intelligent philosophy about how to protect the environment. 3) He wants to devote significant resources to building schools with the goal of decreasing class size. This is by all accounts the most important way to improve academic performance. 4) He wants to create a ten thousand dollar per year tax deduction for college tuition. 5) He recognizes the danger of increasing corporate power and influence. 6) He is in favor of campaign finance reform. 7) He has huge amounts of experience and knowlege about the topics confronting the country. He is a really smart, knowlegable guy. 8) He is an articulate, intelligent guy that will be able to work with other world leaders as an equal. 9) He is a man of the future and understands what is going on with technology and the changes taking place in the world. For example, even though he didn't actually claim to have invented the internet, he certainly deserves a lot of credit for its development.
